The New Year and Hard Decisions

Jan 16th, 2016 by Gemma

The New Year brought with it a lot of thought, along with some long hard conversations.

We’ll be honest, trying to manage becoming a family and balancing that with running a business has been hard. And right now the business isn’t performing well enough to justify all the craziness that that balancing act is causing!

We need to take a step back from Curious for a while to gain some perspective, evaluate where it’s going and how we want to get there.

We are not closing down – this is not the end of Curious Confections!

We’re going to be on hiatus for a while, to spend some time together as a family – something that has been sorely lacking – and to reset ourselves. As such we are departing the farmers markets and suspending special orders for the time being.

When we’re ready we will be picking up special orders again, both big elaborate cakes and small batches of cookies, just because! This is where we started, and it’s where we will return.

But, we’re not going to be returning to the farmers markets until we’re certain that that’s the path to take. While we love the markets dearly and are thrilled there are so many to choose from in Austin, our experience and observation is that abundance is contributing to the departure of quite a few vendors, not just ourselves, and is impacting the markets themselves. It’s wonderful that customers are spoilt for choice, but there aren’t enough consumers to buoy the volume of vendors. There’s too much overlap – both in product and the markets themselves – to be sustainable for little guys like us right now. This may change, and we dearly hope it does.

We thank each and every one of you for your support. We really love seeing your faces and knowing that we make you all happy with our baked goods. Food is love, food is family, and we love our gigantic Austin family tremendously. We will be back – this is not the end! – and we look forward to making you happy again.
