Friday Round Up
Once again a WTF moment from Japan, they are good that those! This is an advert for sushi.
The Supreme Court lifted a ban on Monday on genetically modified alfalfa to mixed opinions. While the University of Sheffield (UK) is trying to develop a new rice plant that will have a higher yield.
More beef has been recalled in California due to an E.Coli scare.
CNN had a recent piece on customers pet peeves about waitstaff.. Then the waitstaff retaliated. Can’t wait to see where this ends up! Having been on both sides, I can see both points of view, so I’m going to stay quiet on the subject.
CNN also had a video article with some “top chefs” (mostly John Besh with some unknowns and contestants from TV’s Top Chef) talking about the impact of the oil spill on sea food.
The betacup project was an attempt to find an alternative to the amount of non recyclable coffee cups that get thrown away every year (around 58 billion). Since Starbucks accounts for a large number of them they were sponsoring the program. Well, the design period is over, with many ideas submitted. The winners? Right here, though no news on when we’ll see them in coffee shops. And while it’s not on the list of winners, I’ve heard that the “Karma Cup” might be seen in the future too.
The wheel of nutrition is a set of plates to help people with no clue about what they should be eating. An interesting concept, but I wonder how high you can stack your sweets in that little blue wedge.. and you’re unlikely to be eating sweets on the same plate as everything else. Unlike the pictures I don’t have my chocolate next to my salad and bread.
The United Plates of America, each state made from a different food or meal. I’d love to see them all pieced together into one map. Can anyone tell me if the foods chosen for each state are a local dish or popular in that area, or if there’s a reason for them. Why is Iowa twinkies, and Alabama Snoballs?
Finally, epicurious had a really interesting piece on high altitude baking. Thankfully not a problem for me but I thought it might help someone else out.
